Attar vs Perfume vs Eau de Toilette: What's the Difference?

EDP, EDT, Attar, Parfum — the fragrance world has a confusing vocabulary. Here's a clear breakdown of what each means and which one is right for you.

The Concentration Scale

Every fragrance product is essentially a blend of aromatic compounds and a carrier. The key variable is the concentration of fragrance oil. Parfum (Extrait) is 20–40% concentration lasting 8–12 hours; Eau de Parfum is 15–20% lasting 6–8 hours; Eau de Toilette is 5–15% lasting 3–4 hours; and Attar is 95–100% lasting 8–18 hours.

What Makes Attars Different

Attars are not diluted in alcohol — they are pure fragrance oil. There is no carrier solvent to evaporate. This is why a single drop of attar can last as long as a full spray of EDP or longer. The trade-off: attars have no projection in the conventional sense. They stay close to the skin rather than throwing a sillage trail the way alcohol-based perfumes do.

EDP vs EDT: Is There a Meaningful Difference?

Yes. An Eau de Parfum typically lasts two to three times longer than an Eau de Toilette of the same fragrance. An EDP also tends to open richer and more complex. EDTs are lighter, often better for warm-weather wear, and typically cheaper.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Want maximum longevity and a skin-close scent? Attar.
  • Want projection, a trail, and spray convenience? EDP or Parfum.
  • Want something light for hot days or the office? EDT.
  • Budget-conscious exploration? Attar in a small bottle gives the best value per hour of wear.
