What Is Bakhoor?

Bakhoor is an aromatic product made from natural wood chips — usually agarwood (oud chips) or other fragrant woods — that have been soaked or blended with essential oils, perfume oils, resins, amber, floral extracts, and spices. When placed on a hot charcoal disc or electric incense burner, bakhoor releases a rich, warm, enveloping fragrance that fills a room.

A Tradition Rooted in Hospitality

In the Gulf region, Saudi Arabia, India, and across the Muslim world, burning bakhoor is a deeply personal ritual connected to hospitality, prayer, and celebration. Guests are welcomed by passing the bakhoor burner around the room so clothing and hair catch the scent.

Bakhoor vs Agarbatti (Incense Sticks)

Traditional Indian agarbatti is a thin stick of pressed charcoal and binding agent coated with fragrance. Bakhoor is a fundamentally different product — made from real wood chips or compressed blends of natural materials, not a manufactured stick. It produces a thicker, more luxurious smoke with greater room-filling power.

How to Burn Bakhoor

  1. Light a quick-light charcoal disc and place it in a heat-safe mabkhara (incense burner with sand base).
  2. Wait until the disc glows orange and turns ash-grey at the edges (2–3 minutes).
  3. Place one or two pieces of bakhoor on the disc using tongs.
  4. The bakhoor will begin to smoke and release its fragrance within seconds.

Choosing Your First Bakhoor

Start with a floral-musk blend if you prefer a lighter, more accessible scent for daily home use. Oud-heavy bakhoor is ideal for special occasions — its smoke is powerful and lingers for hours. At Attarwala Optical House, our bakhoor selection is sourced from trusted suppliers who use real agarwood chips and natural oil blends.
