A computerised eye test (also called an autorefraction) uses a device called an autorefractor to measure how your eye focuses light. You simply look into the machine at a small image, and within seconds it produces an objective reading of your prescription — including sphere, cylinder, and axis values for both eyes.
This reading is used as a starting point for your optician, who then refines it using a phoropter (the traditional lens flip device) until the prescription is precisely matched to your vision.
