The Note Pyramid
Every well-composed fragrance consists of three layers of notes, each evaporating at a different rate. Top notes (citrus, fresh, light herbs) last 15–30 minutes. Heart notes (florals, spices) last 2–4 hours. Base notes (woods, resins, musks) are the slowest to evaporate and are what you smell 4+ hours into wear.
Why Attars Last Longer Than Sprays
Alcohol-based perfumes have a significant portion of the fragrance in top and heart notes, designed to project on first application. Attars, being pure oil, have no alcohol to accelerate evaporation. The oil binds to skin and releases fragrance molecules gradually over many hours — sometimes all day.
Skin Chemistry Matters
Two people can wear the same attar and have it last completely differently. Oily skin holds fragrance longer than dry skin. Warmer body temperature amplifies and burns through fragrance faster. Skin pH can also modify the scent itself.
Practical Tips for Better Longevity
- Moisturise before applying: Unscented body lotion or petroleum jelly on pulse points gives the oil something to grip.
- Apply to hair: Hair fibres hold fragrance exceptionally well.
- Layer same-family scents: Use a matching scented body wash or lotion with a similar fragrance family to build a base.
- Clothing holds scent longer than skin: A light application to your collar or shirt hem can last 24+ hours.
- Choose heavier bases: If longevity is your priority, look for attars with oud, sandalwood, or amber bases.
