The Basics: Cleaning Lenses Correctly
The single most common cause of scratched lenses is improper cleaning. Follow this sequence: rinse under lukewarm running water first to remove grit, then apply a small drop of dish soap and rub gently with fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Never wipe dry lenses directly.
What NOT to Use on Lenses
- Shirt fabric, tissue, or paper towels: These are abrasive at a microscopic level and degrade lens coatings over time.
- Hot water: Can warp lens coatings, especially on AR-coated lenses.
- Window or household glass cleaners: Many contain ammonia or acetone, which strip lens coatings.
Handling: Use Both Hands
Always remove and put on glasses using both hands. One-handed removal repeatedly stresses the hinge on one side, gradually widening the temples and misaligning the frame.
Storage: Always Use the Case
When you are not wearing your glasses, they should be in a hard case, lenses facing up. Leaving glasses face-down on a surface is the fastest path to scratched lenses. Never leave them on a car dashboard — heat warps plastic frames and damages coatings.
Adjustments: When to Visit the Optician
If your glasses sit crooked, slide down your nose, or feel tight — get them adjusted. Every optical store can adjust fit in minutes, usually at no charge. At Attarwala Optical House, frame adjustments are always complimentary.
