Oud: The Liquid Gold of Perfumery

Oud (agarwood) is one of the rarest and most expensive natural ingredients in the world. Here's everything you need to know about this iconic fragrance note.

What Is Oud?

Oud, derived from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees, is one of the most prized — and expensive — fragrance ingredients in the world. When these trees are infected by a specific mold, they produce a dark, aromatic resin as a defense mechanism. It is this resin-soaked wood, known as agarwood, that gives oud its distinctive, complex scent.

Why Is Oud So Valuable?

Less than 2% of wild Aquilaria trees naturally produce agarwood. High-grade agarwood from Southeast Asia and India can fetch prices comparable to gold — hence the name "liquid gold." The extraction process is slow, and genuine oud aged in the wood for decades produces a far richer profile than younger material.

What Does Oud Smell Like?

Oud is famously difficult to describe because no single note defines it. Depending on the region of origin and method of distillation, it can be:

  • Sweet and woody (Indian oud)
  • Smoky and leathery (Cambodian oud)
  • Barnyard and animalic (wild Laotian oud)
  • Floral and green (younger, fresher oud)

Oud in Indian Perfumery

In India, oud has been used in attars and incense for centuries. It often forms the base of a composition, providing longevity and depth to lighter florals or musks layered on top. Indian oud attars blended with rose or sandalwood are a classic pairing found in weddings, festivals, and daily worship.

How to Wear Oud Without Overdoing It

One small drop is genuinely enough. Apply oud to your pulse points, and let the warmth of your skin do the work. Oud is a base note; it will deepen over hours rather than fade. Wear it when you want to leave a lasting impression — it suits formal occasions, cool evenings, and intimate settings.

Identifying Quality Oud

Good oud should feel smooth and rich on application, not sharp or medicinal. Avoid products that list "oud fragrance oil" or "oud synthetic" — these are aroma chemicals that mimic the note without any real agarwood. At Attarwala Optical House, every oud we stock is reviewed for authenticity and quality before it reaches you.
