But they occupy completely opposite ends of the fragrance spectrum — and understanding that difference will help you choose the right one for the right moment.
Oud: Bold, Deep, Unforgettable
Oud (agarwood) is the richest, most complex material in the attar tradition. It is resinous, warm, slightly smoky — sometimes animalic, sometimes sweet, always distinctive. An oud attar announces its presence. It projects from the skin, lingers for hours, and leaves an impression long after you have left the room.

Musk is the opposite of oud in almost every way. It is subtle, clean, and intimate — it smells like warm skin rather than a distinct ingredient. A good musk attar barely announces itself; you have to lean in to catch it. That is precisely its appeal.

Can You Wear Both?
Yes — and the combination is legendary. Rose-musk-oud is arguably the most popular layered attar combination in South Asian and Arabic perfumery. Apply a white musk as your base, let it settle for a minute, then add a small drop of oud on top. The musk softens oud's intensity while oud gives musk a depth it would otherwise lack.
Which Should You Buy First?
If you are new to attars, start with musk. It is low-risk, universally pleasant, and teaches you what oil-based fragrance feels like on skin. Once you are comfortable, try oud — but start with a mukhallat (blended oud) rather than pure agarwood oil, which can be overwhelming at first.
