What Is an Attar?
An attar (also spelled ittar or itr) is a natural perfume oil derived from botanical sources — flowers, herbs, wood, and resins — through a traditional distillation process. Unlike most commercial fragrances, attars contain no alcohol, no synthetic fixatives, and no water. The result is a concentrated, oil-based scent that interacts directly with your skin's natural warmth.
A Craft That Goes Back Centuries
The art of attar-making traces its roots to ancient India, Persia, and the Arab world. The city of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh — often called the "Perfume Capital of India" — has been producing attars using deg-bhapka (copper distillation) for over 400 years. Rose petals, sandalwood, jasmine, and oud are steamed over sandalwood oil, which acts as the base and preserves the fragrance for decades.
How Attars Differ from Modern Perfumes
- No alcohol: Alcohol-based perfumes evaporate quickly; attars linger because oil absorbs slowly into the skin.
- No synthetic chemicals: Traditional attars rely on natural plant and wood extracts.
- Long shelf life: A well-stored attar can last 10–20 years and improve with age, much like fine wine.
- Skin-safe for most people: Without alcohol, attars are generally gentler and do not cause the dryness that alcohol-based sprays can.
Common Attar Families
Attars are classified by their dominant note:
- Floral: Rose, jasmine, mogra (night-blooming jasmine)
- Woody/Earthy: Sandalwood, vetiver (khus), cedar
- Musk: Musk deer-derived or synthetic-natural musk blends
- Oud/Agarwood: Rich, dark, resinous — the most prized and costly
- Fresh/Herbal: Mint, eucalyptus, kewra
How to Apply Attar
A single drop goes a long way. Apply to pulse points — the inside of your wrists, behind the ears, the hollow of your neck, and the crook of your elbows. These areas are warm, which helps project the fragrance. Avoid rubbing your wrists together after applying; this breaks the top notes prematurely.
